Is this tree frog a handsome prince in disguise? It looks as if it is bearing a flower as a gift. The scene was captured by wildlife photographer Megan Lorenz in the rainforests of Sarapiqui, Costa Rica. She says: "It was on a bit of an angle and as the frog went to move off the wood, he grabbed onto the fungus so he wouldn't slip off."

Could this be the world's fattest cat? Janet Ciminelli of North Shore Animal League of America in Long Island, New York, holds Garfield, a 40lb feline. The obese cat was brought into the animal rescue centre after his owner passed away. Staff have put him on a diet and are looking for a new owner who is committed to helping him become healthy and active.

Surprised midwife Keiley Tuck and her husband Lee found three abandoned baby hedgehogs in their garage in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset. The couple were moving their old washing machine when they discovered the tiny animals curled up in dead leaves trying to keep warm. When their mother didn't return, the couple delivered the babies to Secret World Wildlife Rescue centre.

Two baby tigers whose mother refused to feed them found an unusual wet nurse, a wrinkled, sand-coloured Shar Pei dog named Cleopatra. The cubs were born in late May in a zoo at the Russian Black Sea resort of Sochi.

Pink dolphins leap in Hong Kong waters. The Hong Kong Dolphin Conservation Society says increasing high-speed ferry traffic is contributing to a dramatic decline in the numbers of pink dolphins - or Chinese white dolphins - in the city's waters.

Two two-month-old lion cubs are seen in a quarantine room of the Kenya Wildlife Services headquarters in Nairobi. They were rescued by rangers who were forced to shoot the cubs' mother after she was spotted in a suburb of Nairobi.
